    Deafgard

The original and the best, Deafgard is THE smoke alarm for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The Equality Act 2010 states that service providers such as hoteliers and suppliers of sleeping accommodation are legally obliged to make reasonable adjustment for the disabled, which includes deaf and hard of hearing people.

In the event of fire, deaf or hard of hearing people might not be able to hear the fire alarm, especially when they are asleep. This is a high risk, life threatening situation. Deafgard enables deaf and hard of hearing people to be made aware when the fire alarm sounds whilst they are sleeping.

Deafgard is a battery powered, wire free unit with a pad attachment that simply goes under the pillow of the sleeping person. Deafgard is listening for a continuous fire alarm of 75dBA or higher. When the fire alarm sounds the pillow pad vibrates, high intensity LED lights flash and an LCD screen displays ‘fire’.

    How it Works...

Deafgard is a moveable, wire free, battery operated device and simply works by listening out for a continuous fire alarm of 75 dBA or higher, after which the device would activate, alerting the sleeping person to the fire alarm.

Simply turn Deafgard on, place the unit by your bedside table and slide the pad under the pillow. Deafgard will now be listening for the sound of the fire alarm.

Deafgard requires no installation, can be used in any room and helps businesses comply with elements of the Equality Act 2010.

    Operating Deafgard

    On/Off

    1. Turning the unit on for the first time or after changing batteries:

Depress the on/off button (top left button on the keypad marked 1 on diagram page 3 in your Fitting and Operating Guide) to turn the listening circuitry on. The listening circuits will remain active until the unit is manually switched off.
The LCD will also flash to inform the user that the time needs to be set. The LCD will flash for 30 seconds.

    2. Turning the unit on when in passive mode (batteries installed and time set):

Depress the on/off button (top left button on the keypad) to turn the listening circuitry on. The listening circuits will remain active until the unit is manually switched off. The LCD will display the time.

    3. Turning the unit off:

Depress the on/off button (top left button on the keypad) for more than 3 seconds to turn the LCD and listening circuits off. If the time has been set, the internal timer will continue to run despite the unit being turned off.

    Legislation & Standards

Some people need to know about the standards and legislation that relates to products they buy and this is especially important for Fire Safety products, so here goes…We have tried to make it as simple as possible.

    Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 provides a new legislative framework to protect the rights of individuals updating, simplifying and strengthening previous legislation including the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. The Act delivers a simple, modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society. Part 3 of the Act came into force on the 1st October 2010 and states that service providers must undertake reasonable adjustments to avoid disabled people being substantially disadvantaged in accessing services. Examples of reasonable adjustments are:

    • Putting in a ramp to replace steps
    • Provisions for deaf and hard of hearing people
    • Providing larger, well defined signs for people with visual impairment
    • Improving access to toilet or washing facilities

Businesses and organisations are called 'service providers' and include hotels, shops, restaurants, leisure centres and places of worship. A disabled person is covered by the Act if they have ‘a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’.

    Standards

    • EN61000-6-1:2001 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Generic standards. Immunity for residential, commercial and light industrial environments.
    • EN61000-6-3:2001+A11:2004. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Generic standards. Emission standard for residential, commercial and light industrial environments.

    BS5839-1: 2002

BS5839-1: 2002 Supplementary information about the sound of a fire alarm: The British Standard for fire alarm installation, BS5839-1: 2002, (Clause 16.2), states: The sound pressure level of alarm signals “should be not less than 75dB(A) at the bed head within rooms in which the fire alarm system is intended to rouse people from sleep.” Deafgard is listening for a continuous fire alarm of 75dBA or higher. When the fire alarm sounds the pillow pad vibrates, high intensity LED lights flash and an LCD screen displays ‘fire’.

    BS5446-3

Deafgard has been designed to the relevant parts of BS 5446-3: Fire detection and fire alarm devices for dwellings.
