Educating Your Children About Fire Safety Is Very Important

Whether you’re in the home or out-and-about, fire safety is a very important topic – a topic that can sometimes be difficult for parents, teachers and care-givers to tackle.

Educating children, who are naturally inquisitive and keen to touch and play, can be tricky and requires a delicate approach.

Lead By Example

Kids love to copy what adults do so often the best way to teach children about fire is by example. Your actions are constantly being scrutinized by children as they learn how to behave towards other people and objects. By always showing a high level of fire awareness and carrying out typical fire safety measures in everything you do, they will soon learn that fire needs to be treated with respect and care.

Give Clear Instructions

As well as being the epitome of fire safety you also need to talk to children about the dangers of fire.

Children of differing ages need their own special instructions. Under fives are best educated when given clear commands – e.g. ‘Do not go near flames.’ and ‘Find an adult if you see smoke.’.

Older children generally need an explanation as to why they’re being told to do something but be sensitive when describing why fire is so dangerous to life.

Long-Term Fire Safety Education

Teaching your children about fire safety is not a one-time occurrence, fire safety education is an ongoing job as your kids grow up. Don’t be afraid to reiterate the same things over and over again – a lot of what you tell them might go in one ear and out the other!

Additionally, the environment you live in also changes over time with new fire dangers being introduced regularly. Take time to explain why your children shouldn’t touch your new oven or demonstrate how a fire might start if they play with matches.

If you can, make learning about fire safety fun. Award gold stars for remembered fire safety rules and make the weekly testing of your fire alarm a family activity. Other things like making an escape route can also be injected with fun by giving the children the lead. If something is fun it’s more likely to be memorable too.
