Is Your Communicator Ready For The UK PSTN Switch Off?

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) telephone lines are used by many communicators installed in fire alarm panels, intruder alarm panels and other  systems, to transmit information about system errors or fire events. However, from 2025, PSTN lines will be switched off.

Here’s everything you need to know and action that may  be  required.

PSTN Lines Explained

Many fire and intruder alarms panels are fitted with a communicator allowing systems to send a message in the event of a fire, alarm or fault Many of these communicators use standard telephone lines (PSTN).

PSTN is currently struggling to keep up with modern communications, and so, is being replaced with an IP network.

PSTN Phase Out

Due to the national upgrade of phone lines from analogue to digital, PSTN lines will be phased out in December 2025, with everyone instead using the fully digital network.

This means that any system using this type of communicator will cease to function once the telephone exchange is upgraded to the All IP Network.

Replacement Products

If you are currently using products that require PSTN, you can replace them with the following GSM communicators:

Zeta GSM-COM

The Zeta GSM communicator allows a fire alarm panel or other system to send a SMS text message, or create a voice call, in the event of an alarm or a fault.

Eaton SD-GSM

The Eaton SD-GSM is a stand-alone speech dialler that communicates with any system, transmitting alerts of changes in system conditions, which also includes temperature monitoring.

This system is a direct replacement for the highly popular Eaton SD1-EUR – making it an easy swap out.
