It would be fair to say that the vast majority smoke detectors can’t be considered icons of design. And why should they, they’re functional devices serving a purpose, why do they need to look good? Well, think again – a new designer smoke detector has firmly turned that notion on its head.
The award-winning Chick-a-Dee designer smoke detector is a fully-functioning optical smoke detector cunningly designed to look like it’s namesake the Chickadee (part of the tit family of birds). Comfortably perched on a ceiling-mounted branch, it surveys it’s habitat testing the air for smoke particles. Should any smoke be detected, the Chick-a-Dee will chirrup a loud 85dB “dee-dee-dee” alarm to warn anyone in the building of the fire danger.
Created by Dutch designer Louise van der Veld, the Chick-a-Dee has been especially designed for lovers of quirky design and families with small children looking to inject a bit of fun into fire safety.
Since winning the top prize at a design contest organised by the Union of Dutch Insurance Companies in 2006, the Chick-a-Dee has seen an overwhelmingly positive response and can now be found on sale across Europe and North America. This year, Discount Fire Supplies have been selected as one of just a few outlets selling the Chick-a-Dee to UK customers.
No Ordinary Bird
In decades past, songbirds such as canaries were used by miners to provide early warning of deadly conditions. By some quirk of nature these birds have evolved to be acutely sensitive to odourless, poisonous gases like carbon monoxide that we humans are powerless to sense. Coalminers would take cages of the birds down the shafts with them, abandoning their work at the slightest tweet to escape inhaling toxic gases.
The Chickadee itself is no ordinary bird, it’s unique call, “chick-a-dee-dee”, being one of the most complex in the twittering world. Encouraged by the fact that songbirds have been used for centuries as early warning of danger, and taking inspiration from the Chickadee’s unique call, designer Louise van der Veld broke the mould with her innovative smoke detector design.
The Chick-a-Dee In Practice
The Chick-a-Dee has two alarm stages. When a small change in air composition is noted the detector will begin to sound an audible “chick-a-dee-dee” call to warn occupants of potential danger. When a dangerous level of smoke is being approached the songbird detector ups it’s alarm to a continuous “dee-dee-dee” alarm at 85dB – loud enough to wake children and adults sleeping.
This is a battery-powered smoke alarm so a common 9V battery is all that’s needed to power the Chick-a-Dee and no wiring is required. You simply have to mount the branch portion of the unit to the ceiling (instructions are provided) and securely perch the Chick-a-Dee bird on it’s branch. Under normal circumstances the battery will last for 1.5 years but we always recommend that you get into the habit of changing your smoke detector batteries once a year on a memorable date.
Perfect for children’s bedrooms and playrooms, the Chick-a-Dee can also be installed elsewhere in the home where you want to add a bit of designer fire safety flair. For further peace of mind it also comes with a 3-year manufacturer guarantee.
